Apple's anticipated budget-friendly version of its Vision headset, expected to provide mixed-reality experiences at a lower cost, has been delayed yet again. No release is scheduled before 2027.

Some reports initially suggested that Apple may launch a more affordable Vision model as early as 2025, but recent insights from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicate that these plans have shifted substantially.

Premium Model Remains a Priority

Rather than a low-cost headset, Apple seems to be focusing on a higher-end update to the present Vision Pro. According to Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple plans to replace the current Vision Pro with the upcoming M5 chip to boost performance while maintaining the original $3,499 price tag.

This next model is expected in 2025, potentially allowing Apple to address early feedback and refine the device's technical capabilities.

Why No Budget Model Yet?

While the initial reaction to the Vision Pro has been overwhelmingly positive regarding its technological innovation, its high price point has proven to be a significant barrier. Even Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, admitted in a Wall Street Journal interview that the Vision Pro, priced at $3,500, is an 'early adapter product,' a term used to describe a product that is initially adopted by a small group of enthusiasts, instead of a mass-market offering.

However, lowering the price may not fully resolve the issue. According to Kuo, the cheaper headsets will entail significant compromises, such as lower display quality and less functionality, potentially impacting the device's appeal.

Additionally, Apple may be concerned that a lower-cost device will struggle to reach a large audience, echoing the lukewarm reception of the HomePod mini in the smart speaker market. Apple's smart speakers became popular despite a reduced price point, indicating that lower pricing alone may not guarantee widespread adoption.

The Long Road to Widespread Adoption

Apple's unwavering commitment to a premium headset is a testament to the company's belief in the long-term potential of spatial computing. However, the journey to widespread adoption still requires a 'killer app.'

With no clear mass market use cases yet, the Vision lineup expansion into affordable territory could take a backseat to establish the device as a luxury innovation. Apple's Vision headset remains an exclusive experience that pushes technological boundaries but is waiting for a broader breakthrough.
