Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 will be the last entry in James Gunn's fantastic Marvel series. With the director looking towards creating television content instead of film, the upcoming film could be the last of Gunn in cinema. However, before ending his Marvel tenure, the director was considering a show focused on Drax and Mantis.
James Gunn wanted a Drax and Mantis film
Revealed in an interview with Digital Spy about Guardians Volume 3, Drax actor Dave Bautista revealed that a film was talked about. While the movie was only considered, it would've been a great comedic spin-off for MCU fans.
"There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film," Bautista told them. "It was really because it was James Gunn's idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven't heard any follow-up from the studio."
"I don't think they're very interested, or it doesn't fit into the way they have things mapped out. But other than that, no. I mean, as far as my obligations, I've got Guardians 3, and that's probably going to be the end of Drax."
The relationship between Drax and Mantis was one of the funniest, most wholesome parts of the Guardians sequel. Exuding limitless charisma, the two characters fit perfectly together in Gunn's hilarious sci-fi series.

Guardians 3 isn't the same as before James Gunn’s firing
Before Disney fired James Gunn over a series of old, offensive tweets, Guardians 3 was set to kick off Marvel's Phase 4. Following on from Avengers: Endgame, the movie was to be an introduction to the new universe after the death of Thanos.
Bautista reveals that the new version of Guardians 3 is a very different film. With Marvel's complicated universe spinning multiple webs, the new film has been altered to work alongside Phase 4. With the Guardians presumably having Thor along for the ride, it could be a very different beast.
“I don't know what the script of the third film is, to be honest with you," Bautista explained. "There was a script years ago that obviously is going to have to change because the whole direction of the Marvel universe has changed.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is scheduled for release on May 5th, 2023.
