iPad Air pre-order guide: When and where can you buy one?

The new iPad Air is coming. After being announced at an online-only special event in September (which eschewed the usual live audience because of the coronavirus pandemic), the new device is set to be launched this month.

The 4th-generation iPad Air comes with a new, less curvy look – one that’s more akin to the higher-spec iPad Pro – and a variety of colours: alongside the more traditional space grey and silver, you can opt for rose gold, green and sky blue versions.

As well as getting an aesthetic makeover, the new iPad Air is getting a pretty decent tech overhaul, too. Externally, the screen size and display have been upgraded, from a 10.5-inch Retina to a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina. And internally the new model is packing the new A14 Bionic processor. According to the tech giant itself, it’s Apple’s most advanced mobile chip yet, allowing for 40 per cent faster processing power and 30 per cent faster graphics (all the better for Apple Arcade games).

Elsewhere, there's a beefed-up 12MP camera that supports 4K video at 60 FPS, a redesigned Touch ID that's integrated into the top button (hence the smaller screen bezel), and support for the second-gen Apple Pencil and the new Magic Keyboard.

That's an impressive set of specs. So it's no wonder that people are chomping at the bit to get their hands on the new iPad Air.

When and where can you order the new iPad Air?

The 4th generation iPad Air is due to launch this October, although pre-orders have not yet gone live. There's another Apple Event scheduled for Tuesday 13 October, which is widely rumoured to unveil the new iPhone 12 and also herald the start of the iPad Air pre-orders.

What we do know is that there will be a total of four iPad Air models available to choose from, with two different memory options: a 64GB and 256GB version, in both wi-fi only and 'wi-fi and cellular' versions. The UK price points are as follows:

  • Wi-Fi 64GB – £579
  • Wi-Fi 256GB – £729
  • Wi-Fi + Cellular 64GB – £709
  • Wi-Fi + Cellular 256GB – £859

We'll add more pre-order links here from the likes of Currys, John Lewis and Amazon UK as they become available. For now, though, you can find the new iPad Air's pre-order holding page on the Apple UK store here.
