Apex Legends PS5 Upgrade Release Date: Is Apex Legends Getting A 4K 120 FPS PS5 Update?

Do we know yet if there is a confirmed Apex Legends PS5 Upgrade Release Date? We know that Apex Legends is available on PS5. However, at this moment in time it is only playable as a backwards compatible game. In other words, it has yet to be optimised to exploit the capabilities of the new hardware.

There are a lot of fans eager to see an enhanced version of Apex Legends on the PS5. And with 2021 heading towards its latter stages, that clamour has only grown louder. Here is everything we know about an Apex Legends PS5 Upgrade.

Is Apex Legends Getting A 4K 120 FPS PS5 Update?

We already know that Respawn Entertainment have added a few enhancements to the PS5 version of Apex Legends. In a press release prior to the launch of the PS5, EA highlighted that Apex Legends would benefit from:

a performance boost up to 1440p, with more formal enhancements planned for next year. Apex Legends will also support crossplay across PC via Origin™ and Steam, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

1440p effectively translates to 2K, rather than the 4K that other games have been able to enjoy on the PS5. And while the expectation was that more enhancements were planned for 2021, we still haven't seen those plans bear fruit.

In a recent ask me anything, Ryan Rigney, Director of Comms at Respawn, was asked about a next-gen update. He responded by saying:

Oh man, I WISH I had an update to share but we can't say anything definitive at the moment—so can't spoil anything here. Trust us tho [sic] it's in the works and we're excited about it too

While this doesn't give us a definitive date, it does at least confirm that work on the PS5 Upgrade continues, and will hopefully be with us in the not too distant future.

Is Apex Legends Getting A 4K 120 FPS PS5 Update?

While we don't know for certain what the developers are planning, there are a few reasonable expectations. We know, for example, that cross-progression is a goal that Respawn continue to strive for.

We would also expect that 120 FPS would be part of any PS5 Upgrade. After all, frame rates can make a huge difference to your odds of survival in a shootout. So it would be a massive surprise if they failed to add this to the game. They've even stated that this is a "high priority" for them.

Given that Apex Legends has also had a bump up to 2K, we'd also be surprised of they didn't go the whole way to 4K. This is the direction of travel for other, similar games, notably Rainbow Six: Siege. So it would be something of a backwards step if they don't keep up with other developers.

And finally, it would be a surprise of the game isn't optimised in terms of audio, or makes use of ray-tracing, and the haptic feedback that's available on the DualSense controller.

Unfortunately though, Respawn remain very quiet on what exactly they are working on for an Apex Legends PS5 Upgrade. So stay tuned, and we'll bring you more news as soon as we hear something.
