The stunning PSVR 2 headset will officially support PC gaming in a new update later this year. Currently in testing at PlayStation, official PC support will make the device one of the best VR headsets for PC.

With the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 and Valve Index currently cornering the virtual reality market, the PSVR 2 does have a stranglehold on console VR. However, with few VR exclusives on PlayStation 5, fans of the hardware have been left underutilised.

While fans have been working on ways to make the PSVR 2 work on PC, Sony has confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post that official support is coming. This means that VR developers will be able to make custom profiles to support the headset’s standout features.

While the PSVR 2 price is more than the console it’s made for, it is still very reasonable in the PC VR space. With 120HZ 2000x2040 OLED displays, inside-out tracking and even internal eye-tracking for foveated rendering, the VR headset is a very attractive option for those who want to go hard on virtual reality.

Of course, with games like VRChat unsupported by the PlayStation 5, VR gamers on the console are missing out on some of the most popular VR experiences. Furthermore, not every game comes to the PS5, the same reason why Meta Quest allows users to connect to a PC.

Also, those who have a PS5 and use their headset primarily on PC will be able to play both PC VR games and the few PS5 exclusives. Well, unless Sony brings some of its VR goodies to the PC. Horizon: Call of the Mountain would be a great fit - just saying.

One of the biggest annoyances for the original PlayStation VR was its inability to connect to the PC. While it wasn’t a great headset compared to the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, it could’ve been a perfect entry point into PC VR for a lot of people. With PlayStation now more willing to play ball with more open publishing, it makes sense to bring its stunning headset to more people.

The PlayStation VR 2 is available right now for $549.99 / £529.99 / AU$879.95. There’s no date on when PC support is officially launching.
