Breakdown

  • Photoshop AI is here to stay with the Firefly Model
  • This will include a Reference Image tool where users can use images to tell the AI what they want
  • Users are required to own the images they use

Adobe has announced that it will double down on the previously announced Photoshop AI tools with the upcoming Firefly model. The company will be adding new regenerative tools to its app soon, so users will be able to edit images in a much smoother manner.

Users can check out these new tools right now as part of the Firefly Image 3 foundation model, thanks to a Photoshop beta. Fans hoping for these AI tools in the actual app will have to wait a bit, as the tools will be available “later this year” according to The Verge.

One major tool that will interest users is the Reference Image tool, allowing the AI to base an edit on images supplied by said editor. While this will make prompting a lot easier, it is worrisome to know what these AI edits will allow, depending on the individual’s motives.

“Prompting is a pain in the butt,” Ely Greenfield, chief technology officer for Digital Media said. “Why spend an hour trying to craft a three-paragraph prompt if you have an image that you’ve created that’s exactly the thing you want to reference? The saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ applies here.”

Luckily, it looks like there’s going to be some legalities surrounding this bit of Photoshop AI, as users are expected to own the images they reference. The company is also working on a “do not train” prompt that will make sure certain images can’t be modified via Adobe’s Content Authenticity. Hopefully, this will stop anyone who wants to make harmful images they can profit from.

Many will remember some of the disasters that come from AI, like the recent Taylor Swift controversy that actually caused some backlash. As long as it keeps the creation of art in human hands it will satisfy most people, since AI is still pretty harmful. Some people have even tried to make movies with AI and that hasn’t been received well.

Photoshop can be downloaded now, with additional purchases that can be made for better tools.
